A miradouro is a viewpoint, and the terrace photographs you have seen were taken from these. You need no ticket for any of the six. Alongside the estates and the river they are among the things to do in the Douro Valley, and your real question is which one your tour stops at.

1. Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura: the high one above Régua

The Monte de São Leonardo rises east of the village of Galafura, 566 metres up in the municipality of Peso da Régua, the highest of the six. The view reaches Armamar, Sabrosa, Tabuaço, Fontelo and Valença do Douro.

On the hill you will find a Roman castro and Roman wells left by ore extraction. A stone at the viewpoint carries lines by Miguel Torga, the 20th-century Portuguese writer who called the Douro an excesso de natureza, an excess of nature.

By car, take the N313-1 to Galafura, then the municipal road up to the viewpoint. One day tour builds it in, giving you 30 minutes here after Amarante: three times the usual ten-minute stop, and time to walk round the summit.

💡 Useful tip. If Galafura is the view you came for, book the tour that goes there: the Historical Sites day, with lunch and a cruise inside your fare.

2. Miradouro de Casal de Loivos: the balcony over Pinhão

Casal de Loivos, in the Alijó municipality, looks over the Douro and down on the village of Pinhão and its bend of river. Alijó spent more than €400,000 renovating it in 2022 and added a panoramic binocular in October 2023.

No day tour from Porto stops here. You reach it by car, or on foot on the PR20 ALJ, a waymarked circular trail that starts and ends at Pinhão railway station with a branch up to the viewpoint.

3. Miradouro Torguiano de São Cristóvão do Douro: the usual tour stop

The Miradouro Torguiano sits at the entrance to the village of São Cristóvão do Douro, in the Sabrosa municipality. It gives a panoramic view of the terraces and of the point where the Pinhão river meets the Douro, and it is the viewpoint day tours use most.

You get ten minutes here on each tour that stops. 4. The Régua metal bridge: the river from the middle

King Luís I ordered the metal bridge at Régua built in 1872 as a road crossing of the Douro. It was taken out of use in 1949, when its wooden deck had deteriorated, and the municipality later rehabilitated it with Estradas de Portugal as a pedestrian crossing, linked to the riverside walks.

5. Miradouro de Santo António: three bridges and a dam

Santo António stands above Régua on the EM600 at Loureiro. The town and the river fill the view: the curve of the Douro in front of Peso da Régua, the three Régua bridges, and the Bagáuste dam, whose lock lifts boats 28.8 metres. You need a car: take the N601 from Régua to Fontelas, then the N600.

6. Miradouro de São Salvador do Mundo: the far one

The furthest of the six from Porto, on the EN 222-3 at Monte do Ermo, in São João da Pesqueira. It is the largest sanctuary of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, with chapels from the 16th century onward. The view takes in the Douro and its tributaries, the Valeira dam and the historic Cachão da Valeira.

You drive up a narrow paved road to limited parking, and no day tour reaches it. Plan it as part of a drive further upriver; the Douro Valley map shows where it sits against Pinhão and Régua.

Seeing the viewpoints without a tour

Casal de Loivos is the one viewpoint the train reaches. The Linha do Douro from Porto São Bento takes about 2 h 25 to Pinhão, and the PR20 ALJ starts at the station. Galafura, Santo António and São Salvador do Mundo need a car, and whoever drives cannot taste at the estates in between.
